15 Years Developing New Theatre Works

Since its inception in 2003, the Stratford-based SquareWrights Playwright Group has had more than 100 productions and staged readings including short-play festivals, the 24-hour Fast Forward Theatre Festival and fundraisers for Katrina and Tsunami victims, the Stratford Library and the historical Perry House. The group has been represented multiple times at the Stratford Summer Arts Festival on the grounds of the Shakespeare Theatre. In addition, we’ve collaborated with the Stratford Arts Commission, The Temple Players, the Stratford Arts Guild, Eastbound Theatre of Milford, New Plays at Blackstone in Branford, Two Roads Brewery and Bridgeport’s Playhouse on the Green.

In 2004, the group had its first “Quickies in the Stacks” short play festival at the Stratford Library, an approximately hour-long event featuring six original plays by local playwrights. Since then, the group has traditionally presented “Quickies” festivals twice a year – in the spring and fall at the library. Over the years, we have added special presentations in summer, such as our Fringe Festival, which was produced at local restaurants in Stratford; and winter, such as a holiday-themed staged reading.
